SOLAR VILLAGE SDG
Community Interest Company
Kaduruwewa Primary School
The project, initiated in 2008, aimed to prevent the closure of a rural Sri Lankan school facing declining enrollment due to poor facilities (no electricity, limited water). Prof. Dharmadasa, with his own funds, provided grid electricity and replaced the diesel-powered water pump with a solar-powered one, reducing environmental impact and saving villagers costs. This improved living conditions and empowered the community. The school received free water, and villagers saved on expensive diesel. Encouraged by this success, further donations and community labor led to the construction of a library and a classroom, significantly increasing student enrollment to 85. The project also established a scholarship program for deserving students, further boosting educational opportunities in the village.
