The Solar Village Concept:

Community Empowerment
At Solar Village SDG cic, we want to expand the work established under Professor Dharmadasa to work closely with rural communities to implement renewable energy projects that enhance local livelihoods and create opportunities for economic growth. By engaging with the community, we aim to build sustainable energy solutions that address their specific needs and contribute to overall development.
Energy Access Advocacy
We are committed to advocating for universal energy access and promoting the adoption of renewable energy technologies in rural areas. Our efforts center around raising awareness, influencing policies, and collaborating with stakeholders to ensure that clean energy solutions are accessible to all, especially those in remote and underserved regions.
Capacity Building
SOLAR VILLAGE SDG prioritises the education and training of local community members to enable them to manage, maintain, and benefit from renewable energy systems. Through capacity building programs, we empower individuals with the skills and knowledge needed to embrace sustainable energy practices and drive positive change within their communities.
Environmental Sustainability
Our commitment to environmental sustainability drives our efforts to minimize the carbon footprint and promote eco-friendly practices in rural areas. We integrate environmental conservation principles into our projects, aiming to create a harmonious coexistence between renewable energy deployment and the preservation of natural resources.
Partnerships for Progress
Collaboration is at the heart of our approach. We actively seek partnerships with governmental organizations and departments, charities and non-profits, and businesses to amplify the impact of our projects and expand the reach of sustainable energy solutions. Through strategic alliances, we strive to catalyze positive change and foster inclusive development.
Regional Focus
SOLAR VILLAGES operates in diverse regions currently in Sri Lanka, tailoring our projects to address the specific energy needs and socio-economic dynamics of each area. By understanding the unique context of different regions, we adapt our interventions to ensure meaningful and lasting improvements in energy access, economic empowerment, and overall well-being.
Empowering Communities Through Renewable Energy
Spotlight on Kaduruweva:
A Case Study
BEFORE Solar Village:
Kaduruweva Primary School

AFTER Solar Village:
Kaduruweva Primary School

KADURUWEVA PRIMARY SCHOOL
Kaduruwewa Primary School was earmarked for closure in 2007, as student numbers had fallen to just 20.

The school is in the "dry zone" of Sri Lanka and had operated for 50 years without tap water or electricity. Teachers did not wish to be posted to the school as it was an uninviting environment. It had first been built through community efforts of Sramadana (Voluntary work). The government decision to close thus came in 2007.
The school Principal contacted our Chairman Emeritus Professor Dharmadasa since this was the school that he himself had attended as a child. He immediately started the pilot solar village with his own funds. In 2008, the electricity grid was available along the road.
He first arranged to provide electricity to the school bringing light and uplifting the school out of its darkest days. He then arranged for a solar water pumping system, supplying the school and the village temple with a free water supply. Computers, and other facilities were also donated by others.
Thus empowered and enhanced teachers were encouraged to join the school. Kaduruwewa school began to thrive. Within one year, student numbers rose to ~85 so much so that the school needed another building. During the second year a library and a new classroom was built. Much of the labour was provided by the school's parents with support being provided to purchase building materials.
Since then, the year 5 scholarship exam success rates have jumped to 60% and the school is doing exceedingly well in the Zone. There are around 450 primary schools in the Maho zone, and head teachers inform us that Kaduruwewa Primary school is now shining among the top three.
Every year, Professor Dharmadasa visits the school and presents educational materials in a prize giving. This is an hugely motivating event and since 2023, the school has organised a variety show at this event, with a children’s public address for teachers and parents.
The photographs below are from the 2023 Prize giving event at Kaduruwewa Primary school.
The school now has a “School Song” which generates a sense of belonging and a “Nice little Band".
The Solar Village concept was able not only to prevent this gem of a school from closure but to enable it to prosper.
